Balance

A couple of weeks ago Toby and Summer had taken in a movie at the theatre so I decided to take the rare opportunity that I had to myself and scour the local Goodwill. I love Goodwill's and Thrift Stores. You never know what your going to find, but I get the most pleasure from scanning the book section.

Books are expensive retail but you can pick them up at the thrift store for little to nothing...and if you're like me, I have a wide reading variety so I'm not hard to please when it comes to reading material.

Anyway, I was looking through the cook book section and found this book called FIT FOR LIFE. I picked it up and flipped through it and found it initially interesting enough to purchase. I read the book and got a lot of useful information out of it and some of the raw food recipes even look very edible.

I'll have to admit I like to eat and have a hearty appetite for most any type of food. I guess I'm making up for spending most of my younger years being super thin (emaciated as my mother used to call me)and not having a healthy appetite.

Anyway, even though most of the recipes in the book looked good I realized that most of them had ingredients that would not be readily available in my local HEB or Walmart. I also decided that not everyone in my family would like the recipe.

I have a hard enough time trying to figure out a simple weekly menu much less one that requires me to exercise my brain or run from store to store.

So, I finally decided that I would just keep more veggies and fruits in the fridge and buy healthier brands of the foods that we eat frequently. For example, instead of buying the cheap white bread, I'll replace it with whole grain bread and eat more salads with our meals. Or buy real butter instead of spreadable margarine.

Per the advice from the FIT FOR LIFE book I started eating only fruits and veggies for breakfast. I can feel the difference. The book talked about how much energy your body takes to digest food and it's best to eat easily digestible foods up until noon so you won't have an energy crash before noon time. Plus, since I have been doing my morning running/walking routine I find that I don't want anything heavy on my stomach for a couple of hours after my run.

It all boils down to a couple of things. I love to eat and I don't want to deny myself the foods that I really love, BUT I can make a few changes that allow me to still eat the foods I love and remain healthy.

Every part of our lives are about balance.

  1. I too have changed the way I eat. It's amazing what happens when you stop and absorb new information, and truly do a new thing!

  2. Seeing food as energy changed the way I ate many years ago, eating only veggies and grains has transformed my body, but also my awareness of life too, it is wonderful when we begin to see food in a new light, enjoy ♥
